Outdoor Living Spaces That
Work in Every Season —
Not Just the Summer
Burton Builds designs and installs patios that extend your living space outdoors. Proper drainage, quality materials and precise finishing create entertainment areas that look sharp and perform for decades.
What Our Patio & Paving Service Covers
A patio is the centrepiece of your outdoor living space. At Burton Builds, we install patios using natural stone, porcelain, block paving, Indian sandstone and concrete paving across Crawley, Horsham and the wider West Sussex region.
Every patio installation includes full ground preparation, sub-base compaction, correct drainage falls, appropriate jointing and professional edge detailing.
This service is for homeowners who want durable, attractive outdoor entertaining space built to last — not a quick cosmetic fix that shifts and cracks.
Professional patio installation matters because incorrect falls lead to standing water, poor sub-base causes subsidence, and wrong jointing compounds lead to weed growth and frost damage.

What Goes Wrong With a Badly Installed Patio
Standing water is the most visible sign of a poorly installed patio. Without correct falls, water pools on the surface, stains the paving and creates slip hazards.
Subsidence occurs when the sub-base is too shallow or poorly compacted. Individual slabs sink creating trip hazards and an uneven surface.
Incorrect jointing leads to weed growth, ant nests and frost damage that lifts slabs. Many budget installers use the wrong compound for the material type.
DIY and budget patio installations typically need significant repair or full replacement within 3-5 years.

Patio Materials and Installation Methods We Use
Natural sandstone remains a popular choice for West Sussex patios, offering warm tones and natural variation. We lay sandstone on a full mortar bed over compacted sub-base with slurry primer for maximum adhesion.
Porcelain paving is increasingly popular for its consistent colour, low porosity and modern appearance. We use specialist adhesives and priming systems designed for porcelain's non-porous surface.
Indian stone provides an excellent balance of cost and appearance. We source ethically from reputable importers and calibrate slab thickness for consistent laying height.
Block paving works well for patio areas combined with driveways, providing a cohesive look across the whole property frontage.
For all materials, we install a minimum 100mm compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, set falls at 1:80 minimum for effective drainage, and use jointing compounds suited to each material type.
We also construct steps, raised planters, seating walls and integrated lighting channels as part of patio projects.
